Church St. Mark’s

The two-manual mechanical instrument was built by Jan František Gottwald in 1833 according to the design of his father Josef Gottwald. The instrument has been preserved without any major interventions in almost its original state and is one of the few surviving opuses of the Gottwald organ workshop. The organ is artistically built in the classical spirit. At first glance, the massive two-case concept with a side prospectus and a positive built into the choir rail catches the eye. The register layout tends more towards Baroque traditions and is reminiscent of the layout practice of the Royal Organ Workshop. The instrument is also astonishing in its size. The number of registers makes it one of those instruments that were usually built only in large cities or important centres.

In the past, the instrument was repaired in 1883 by Adolf Hanisch and around 1894 by Ženatý-Kunt from Lomnice nad Popelkou. In 1994, the organ builder Karel Synek from Hradec Krkonoše began a complete reconstruction of the instrument. Shortly after the completion of the repair of the second manual and the playing table, however, this talented organist tragically died. His work was followed up in 2007 by organist Ivan Červenka, who completed the repair of the main machine and pedal. The new finish of the organ was done by Kamil Mareš from Horní Čermná. The then mayor Svatopluk Kněžour and Oldřich Miška, the founder of the local association Circle of Friends of the Art of St. Mark the Evangelist, who received funds from the Regional Authority, also had a great deal of merit in completing the repair of the organ. The successful completion of the work contributed to a subsequent grant for the restoration of the historic organ.
